1Hole

There are three, and every one of them is about pace. Nothing here is built to make the game harder. It is built to get eighteen holes played in under three hours.

No practice
swings

Walk up and hit it. The rehearsal is not the shot, and it is the single biggest thing standing between a foursome and a three hour round. You will find out quickly which swing is actually yours.

No re-tees

Every hazard plays lateral. Drop where it went in, take your stroke, and keep walking. Nobody goes backwards on this golf course.

No layups

If you can reach it, go at it. Laying up is a second decision about a shot you already thought about once. Take the one you actually want to hit.

None of this is new. It is how the game started and how it is still played on the links, where a round takes three and a half hours on foot and the group behind you is never standing there watching. Montana just has better parking.

Three rules is a short list, so the questions are always the same four or five. Here they are answered once.

What happens if somebody takes a practice swing?
Warning first. After that it is one stroke, every time. Everybody gets the warning, because you are unlearning something you have done for thirty years and nobody out here is trying to catch you out.
What actually counts as one?
Waggle all you want. Set up to a spot, take the club back like you mean it with no ball in front of you, and that is a practice swing. If you have to ask, it was one.
So where do I drop?
Everything plays as a lateral hazard. Two club lengths from where it crossed, no nearer the hole, one stroke, and keep walking.
Out of bounds and lost balls too?
Same. Drop where it left, one stroke, play on. Nobody walks back to the tee. The USGA wrote its own version of this in 2019 (Model Local Rule E-5, a two stroke drop instead of stroke and distance) for exactly this reason, so being reasonable about it is not something we invented.
Is a layup ever allowed?
If you cannot reach it, hitting your next shot is not a layup, it is just golf. The rule is about the shot you can reach and talk yourself out of.
Who enforces any of this?
You do, on yourself. Golf has worked that way for five hundred years and it is not the part we are changing.
What if we finish over three hours?
You post the time anyway. It is a standard to play toward, not a number to be dishonest about. Most groups get closer the second time.
